   You’ll have a “hole” in your pocketbook from this exercise! This is simple but dangerous – In normal homes there is a 2×4 piece of wood (called framing member) every 16 inches (underneath the drywall) if you were to remove two or more at the vertical area you wish to create, you must put in “Headers”, those would be placed horizontally on both top and bottom of your cuts through the 2×4s – to maintain the intregrity of the wall strength . If you measure correctly you could use the material you remove from the vertical beams and make them headers. There is no step by step web site, but a good handyman could make your dreams come true.

   Measure the area that you want to use as the recess. Make sure your wall is not load bearing (if it is you will need to support the ceiling with posts until the recess frame is in place). Mark the wall then cut out the drywall between the studs.Buy as many 2×4’s required to make your recess,assemble your recess and measure the outer surface of your recess and transfer the measurements to the wall opening and adjust the opening size if needed. You will need to cut any studs in the opening so you can set your recess in place.If your wall is load bearing you will need to double your 2×4’s to support the weight.Once the frame work is in place you will need to clad the wood frame with drywall,install steel corners and finish with drywall mud.
